A better coating for nanocarriers could offer a more effective targeted drug delivery method.
While targeted drug delivery methods have been in development for some time, the common method of binding the nanocarrier to the target cells requires complex chemical processes that can also degrade the antibodies. As an alternative, the teams from Mainz University Medical Center and the Max Planck Institute created a simpler method based on adhesion that combines the antibodies and drug carriers in an acidic solution. The coating is not only more effective, it also helps block the blood proteins that could interfere with the nanocarrier docking on the chosen cell.
