BiliCam App Detects Newborn Jaundice

BiliCam App Detects Newborn Jaundice
Aug-31-14
A new smartphone app able to detect newborn jaundice in minutes could help nervous new parents breathe a bit easier.

Developed by a team at the University of Washington, the BiliCam app uses a color calibration card along with the smartphone's camera and flash to check the infant's skin for the yellowish signs of jaundice. The card is placed on the child's stomach, after which the parent takes a photo that includes both the card and the child in the image. After the app calibrates the color using the card (to compensate for lighting or skin tones) the data is sent to the cloud for analysis and a near-instant result.

In clinical tests, the BiliCam was proven to perform at least as well as conventional screening tools, if not better. The team hopes to receive FDA approval within a few years.
