Bioabsorbable Wound Dressing Improves on Nature

Bioabsorbable Wound Dressing Improves on Nature
May-30-19
An innovative nanoscale, bioabsorbable wound dressing inspired by crustaceans could save lives on both the military and civilian fronts.

Developed by a team from Texas A&M, the dressing’s structure was inspired by chitosan, known for its ability to staunch blood flow and already used in dressings in its natural form. To improve on the material’s natural ability, the research group encapsulated entangled fibers of chitosan inside a hydrogel that dissolved in about a week. The result was a dressing with a much larger wound-healing surface that can be applied to the wound site and left in place to biodegrade naturally.
