Boeing's Self-Cleaning Lavatory

Boeing's Self-Cleaning Lavatory
Mar-05-16
Boeing has unveiled a self-cleaning lavatory for airplanes that is able to kill 99.99 percent of germs in three seconds.

The prototype lavatory offers hands-free controls, including the toilet lid and seat, door latch and hand dryer, which reduces the spread of germs. A vacuum vent system in the floor keeps the area clean, and a series of UV light strips that meet medical standards will switch on automatically when the user leaves the room. These lights will destroy germs in seconds, and a safety system prevents the lights from coming on if someone is in the room.

According to Jeanne Yu, Boeing Commercial Airplanes Director of Environmental Performance, "In the prototype, we position the lights throughout the lavatory so that it floods the touch surfaces like the toilet seat, sink, and countertops with the UV light once a person exits the lavatory. This sanitizing even helps eliminate odors."
