Brain Cells Aid in Alzheimer's Research

Brain Cells Aid in Alzheimer's Research
Mar-09-11
Scientists have created brain cells from human stem cells, which could enable scientists to test treatments to keep brain cells from dying, and could be a major breakthrough in the treatment of Alzheimer's patients.

The lab grown brain cells could also function as reserves of extra cells, ready to be implanted into the brains of Alzheimer's sufferers. While the new development is not a cure for Alzheimer's, it does allow researchers a better method for studying how to treat memory loss.

Brain cells have been created from skin cells before, but the new method is the first one that creates the specific neurons associated with learning.
