A new breathalyzer-like device able to test for diabetes could eliminate the need for invasive blood tests.
Based on the knowledge that elevated levels of acetone in breath indicate diabetes, the palm-sized breathalyzer features an adsorbant polymer that traps the acetone from exhaled breath and transfers it to a cavity. A laser in the cavity measures the amount of acetone, prompting the system to trigger an alert if the amount is too high. In tests on volunteers, the breathalyzer device’s readings were similar to those obtained using mass spectrometry.
