Bubble-Filled Tray Increase Solar Cell Efficiency

Sep-10-16 An innovative plastic overlay from the startup Insolight could increase solar panel efficiency at an affordable cost.

The Insolight system was designed for use with very high performance solar cells that already achieve an efficiency of 42 percent. These “super cells” are expensive to manufacture, so the Insolight team used only a few of the super cells in their design. Then, to increase the performance of these key cells, the team created a plate with plastic bubbles that work together to focus the sunlight on the area of high-performance cells. The plate will move during the day to track the sun, allowing the system to capture the maximum amount of possible sunlight.
