The CapCam system from researchers at Carnegie Mellon University lets users pair mobile devices using the gadget’s built-in camera.
Whereas common file transferring systems rely on Bluetooth, which can be slow, or extra hardware, such as NFC tech, the CapCam system takes advantage of the device’s built-in camera. The mobile device to be paired, running the CapCam software, is pressed against a touchscreen device, which also has the software installed. The touchscreen will then transmit the pairing instructions via a unique color pattern of flashing lights, which the mobile device uses to create a wireless connection.
Applications include accessing information at public kiosks and then transferring the data to a mobile device, or using the phone itself as a digital game controller.
