A prototype car headlight system that responds to the driver's line of sight could make nighttime driving much safer.
Developed by a team from Vauxhall/Opel, the "LED matrix light system" uses of a standard webcam to scans the driver's facial features and head position to determine the light of sight. Through a series of complex algorithms, the system then translates the data into commands that control the direction of the headlights' beams in real-time. According to the development team, the system can adapt to any driver, without calibration.
The system could begin being installed on cars in about eighteen months.
