Carbon Nanotubes from Plastic Bags

Carbon Nanotubes from Plastic Bags
Sep-28-13
A team of scientists has developed a new use for plastic bags by using them to make high-value carbon nanotube membranes.

The team, from the University of Adelaide, had been growing nanotubes in the pores of alumina membranes using ethanol as the carbon source. When PhD student Tariq Altalhi realized that any carbons source could be used in the process, the team experimented by vaporizing pieces of non-biodegradable plastic bags in a furnace, which produced plenty of carbon for the production process. The process of vaporizing the bags also required no toxic catalysts or solvents.

Great idea to recover the oil used to make plastic bags. Seems to be no easy way around the use of plastic bags best to find a proper way to recycle them. The more they are worth the less of them we will find in the gutter.
