CellScope Loa Detects Blood Parasites with a Smartphone

CellScope Loa Detects Blood Parasites with a Smartphone
May-09-15
The CellScope Loa smartphone platform can quickly detect the Loa loa parasite in blood, providing clinicians with a timely diagnosis that could reduce fatalities.

The system is made up of a specialized, 3D-printed base equipped with an Arduino circuit board and Bluetooth connectivity, among other necessities. The base supports the smartphone while the phone gathers videos of the blood sample, which are then analyzed by the companion app for any signs of the microscopic worms. The entire procedure can be carried out by untrained clinicians, and the results are delivered within minutes.
