Ceramic Scrail Could Replace Bone Screws

Ceramic Scrail Could Replace Bone Screws
Oct-30-16
A new ceramic screw nail could help eliminate the need for costly—and painful—follow-up surgeries.

Currently, metal titanium screws are used to set bone fractures, but those screws have to be removed once the bone has healed in order to prevent potential side effects. To reduce the need for future surgeries, the research team created a screw nail combination (called a scrail) made of biocompatible calcium phosphate. The scrails are designed to be hammered into the bone like nails, and will rotate while they are being pounded in to create a secure fit. Once in place, the scrails will integrate with the bone tissue and remain in place permanently.
