"Chemical Earmuffs" Could Prevent Hearing Loss

"Chemical Earmuffs" Could Prevent Hearing Loss
Feb-04-20
Prolonged exposure to loud noise can cause hearing loss as people age, but now biologists are using mice to test "chemical earmuffs" that could prevent hearing loss without affecting sound quality.

Researchers have identified a receptor they can block to prevent noise-induced hearing loss that happens in some synapses between inner ear hair cells and nerve cells when loud noises occur.

Currently the drugs must be administered through a surgical procedure, but a less invasive technology is also being sought to deliver the drug.
