Chemputer 3D Drug Printer

Chemputer 3D Drug Printer
Jul-26-12
Chemist Lee Cronin is developing an idea for a new 3D "chemputer" able to print molecules, which could eventually allow pharmacists to download ingredients and print out drugs as needed.

Still at the concept stage, the "chemputer" uses simple reagents as inks, combining them to form more complex molecules. The prototype system is also able to print a miniature lab from a tested blueprint, pre-programed for used with a standard pattern of inks. This allows the combination ratios and speeds for different "inks" to be ingrained into the system by changing the sizes and relationships of the reaction chambers.

The "chemputers" could lead to a new generation of affordable medicines. "There are loads of drugs out there that aren't available," Cronin says, "because the population that needs them is not big enough, or not rich enough. This model changes that economy of scale; it could make any drug cost effective."
