Color-changing Paper Identifies Mercury in Water

Color-changing Paper Identifies Mercury in Water
Feb-12-13
Researchers have developed a simple and portable way to test for mercury levels in water that gives results visible to the naked eye.

The test, created by a team at the University of Burgos in Spain, uses a sheet impregnated with rhodamine dye, which changes color in the presence of mercury. The composition of the sheet can be altered to suit different parameters, and users requiring a more detailed analysis can photograph the sheet with a mobile-camera device and then quantify the level of mercury in the sample using an open-source software.

Currently, methods for identifying mercury concentrations are expensive and complex.
