Color-Coded Exosome Biosensor Detects Disease

Color-Coded Exosome Biosensor Detects Disease
Dec-31-17
An innovative new biosensor could open the door to health tests as easy to read as a home pregnancy test.

Developed by a team at Aalto University, the plasmonic biosensor can detect exosomes, biomarkers of disease and cellular processes, in blood and urine. Though detecting these particles has typically been difficult, the new sensor is made up of plasmonic metaparticles deposited on a black surface that absorbs the surrounding electromagnetic radiation. The unique light absorption and reflection properties of the plasmonic material allow the diseased exosomes to be detected by the naked eye, opening the door to color-coded, easy to read health tests.
