Contact-Free Sensors Help Predict Falls

Contact-Free Sensors Help Predict Falls
Jun-02-16
A new contact-free sensor system uses lasers and under-bed sensors to monitor the health of elderly patients.

Created by a team from the University of Missouri, the under-bed sensors consist of flexible tubes that have been filled with water, enabling them to detect movement and respiration rates. These sensors were augmented with radar transmitters that measure the patients’ walking rate. The two systems were tested separately, and proved to be helpful in determining the patient’s general health, as well as the likelihood of them suffering a severe fall.
