A new synthetic mat for roofs helps cool buildings by allowing them to sweat.
Developed by a team from ETH Zurich, the mat is made from a permeable polymer that is spread over the rooftop, where it absorbs and locks in rainwater. As the temperature rises to a certain level the mat becomes hydrophobic and expels the water, allowing the building to cool itself passively as the water evaporates.
The mat could cut the load of air conditioners by up to 60 percent.
