The neck-worn Cova sensor is able to monitor a patient’s chest fluid levels to provide an early warning system for congestive heart failure—reducing the number of emergency hospital admissions.
Created by Perminova, the Cova sensor is equipped with disposable electrodes that adhere to the chest with an adhesive. Worn for only 15 minutes per day, the device monitors the fluid levels in the chest over time, along with heart rate, respiration rate, heart rate variation, stroke volume, cardiac output and posture. Information collected by the necklace is sent to an Android tablet or Qualcomm Life 2net Hub via Bluetooth, which then sends it to the cloud.
Weight gain and fluid build-up are clear signs of an imminent heart failure event (becoming evident four days and seven days before the event), and changes in stroke volume and cardiac output can signal an event up to 18 days before it occurs.
