Cruise RP-1 Sensor Pod Adds Self-Driving to Aftermarket Cars
Jul-11-15
Give your car a bit of autonomy with the Cruise RP-1 Sensor Pod, an aftermarket device that will give self-driving capabilities to a standard car.

Currently available for use only in California on the Audi 4 or S4, the roof-mounted Sensor Pod consists of an array of cameras, radar systems and actuators that allow the vehicle to perform partially autonomous cruise control, braking, and lane tracking. These sensors communicate with a computer installed in the trunk of the car, and the entire system can be activated by pressing a dashboard-mounted button.

The Cruise RP-1 is not meant to be totally autonomous, and the human driver is expected to remain alert. However, the system can respond more quickly than the human in many instances, such as responding to obstacles in the lane, and can help take some of the load off of driving and lessen instances of fatigue.
