D-air Skier Airbag Ready for the Competition

D-air Skier Airbag Ready for the Competition
Feb-27-14
The D-air Ski airbag has been refined for three years, resulting in a slim, aerodynamic garment that can detect a crash and inflate to protect the skier from injury.

The manufacturer, Dianese, has been collaborating with the International Ski Federation for three years to create an algorithm that allows the D-air system to differentiate between the normal forces of ski racing, such as a jump or hard turn, and an actual fall. The airbag will only inflate when the data received from at least seven sensors exceeds a designated threshold.

Once the signals of a fall have been detected, the 8-liter airbag will inflate using a cold gas inflation mechanism. The airbag can absorb up to 61 percent of the impact, and compete inflation occurs withing 100 milleseconds. The D-air Ski is also slim enough for competitive use, fitting beneath the ski suit and on top of the now-standard back protection.
