A new, non-invasive technique for assessing spine health relies on vibrations, which are able to detect problems overlooked by conventional methods.
Currently being tested by teams at the University of Alberta, Canada and University of Southern Denmark, the system works by applying a series of gentle vibrations to the lower back area using a small probe. The energy transmitted by the vibrations are then measured with an array of sensors, which allows clinicians to determine the type, severity and location of a spinal disorder.
The vibration technology is being made commercially available by the by University of Alberta spinoff VibeDx.
