Discarded Tire Mosquito Trap

Discarded Tire Mosquito Trap
Apr-09-16
In response to the brewing Zika virus and a Grand Challenges Canada initiative, researchers have created an effective mosquito trap, called the ovillanta, made from a single tire.

The tire trap is made up of a pair of 50 cm tire sections arranged to form a kind of cave with water and a mosquito attractant in the bottom section. Female mosquitoes are attracted to the ovillanta, where they lay their eggs and release pheromones. This in turn attracts more egg-laying mosquitoes to the trap. Twice weekly, the paper in the trap is removed and checked for eggs, while the water is filtered to remove any larvae and then placed back in the trap. By using the same pheromone-laced water over and over again, the trap becomes even more potent as it attracts more mosquitoes over time.
