Disguised Nanosponges Absorb Toxins in the Blood

Disguised Nanosponges Absorb Toxins in the Blood
Apr-29-14
A new, camouflaged nanosponge fights infections by attracting toxins and then absorbing them like a sponge.

The nanosponges have been coated with a red blood cell membrane, which disguises them as them circulate in the bloodstream and absorb the toxins produced by an infection. A single red blood cell membrane can hold 3000 nanosponges, which can be safely disposed of in the liver once they are saturated with toxins. The camouflaged nanosponges can be used to fight any type of infection that attacks the cellular membrane.

The nanosponges have already proven success in trials on mice, and the team plans to begin human clinical trials next.
