Dot Braille Smartwatch Could Also Increase Literacy

Dot Braille Smartwatch Could Also Increase Literacy
Aug-05-15
The first of its kind, the Dot Braille smartwatch was designed to allow the visually impaired more access to information—and potentially increase the literacy rate of the population.

Developed by a team in South Korea, the Dot includes many of the features found on today’s smartwatches, with one notable exception: the Dot includes an active Braille display that can project four Braille characters at a time. The user can set the speed at which the characters refresh, allowing them to personalize their ‘reading’ speed.

While performing many the same functions as a conventional smartwatch, such as allowing the user to check their emails and texts on their smartphone, the Dot’s active Braille display gives the Dot an advantage over smartwatches designed for the sighted; it can perform splendidly as an ebook reader. And since over 95 percent of blind people are also illiterate, the team hopes the easier access to Braille-enabled ereaders (which currently cost in the thousands of dollars) will encourage more people to read.

I read with interest, that you are working in a Dot Braille smart watch that can increase the literacy rate of the visually impaired and I think that you might be interested in a new method of reading for the blind that is more efficient and easier to learn than the braille method. My method is based on a lineographic system designed to allow the blind people to write on a small touch-sensitive screen that works as a universal keypad and can be used to send text messages in different european languages and other languages such as Korean, Japanese and Chinese. The new reading method instead of using a six dot cell uses a combination of dots and dashes that can be used with different materials such as literary text, mathematics, science and computer software. Sincerely,
