A new technology using computer-aided design software and nanoscale technology lets researchers make new drugs using a 3D printer and a drag-and-drop interface.
The software is part of the Parabon Essemblix Drug Development Platform, which was partially funded by the National Science Foundation. The CAD software, called inSçquio, allows scientists to design molecular pieces with specific functions and then optimize the design with the cloud platform Parabon Computation Grid, which finds sets of DNA sequences that can self-assemble the new components. The researchers also chemically synthesized trillions of copies of the newly designed molecules, allowing production to take place in a matter of weeks, or even days.
Applications could eventually include synthetic vaccines for biodefense and gene therapies able to target an individual’s specific disease, as well as aiding the development of nanoscale logic gates and molecular nanosensors.
