E-Tattoo Monitors the Heart for Days

E-Tattoo Monitors the Heart for Days
Jun-22-19
A stretchable tattoo able to monitor the heart for days offers a comfortable and accurate way to keep track of heart health.

Developed by Nanshu Lu’s team at the University of Texas, the graphene-based wearable tattoo is lightweight and stretchable enough to worn over the heart for days at a time. The sensor is made from polyvinylidene fluoride, a piezoelectric material that will generate an electrical charge under mechanical stress, and is placed on the chest based on 3D digital image correlation technology that maps the best location using chest vibrations.

The tattoo provides both ECG and SCG measurements, which according to Nanshu Lu offers “…much greater insight into heart health by the synchronous collection of data from both sources.”
