Ear Stimulator Alleviates Gulf War Illness

Ear Stimulator Alleviates Gulf War Illness

A new wearable device able to alleviate dizziness could have applications in veterans as well as the elderly.

One of the primary symptoms of Gulf War Illness—which affects almost a third of veterans—is dizziness, though the cause of the disorder is not well understood.

To help alleviate the dizziness associated with the disease, the team from Rutgers University created a device that is worn on the waist, with a wired, electrically stimulating connector that extends to clip onto the earlobe. The device will generate and send random, low-level electrical noise patterns through the connector and into the body, reducing the feelings of dizziness and improving balance. In addition to its value in treating veterans, the team believes the stimulating device could also help treat dizziness in the elderly.
