Early Detection for Sepsis

Early Detection for Sepsis
Jul-07-17
A new point of care detector for sepsis works quickly and without needing to process the blood.

Early detection of sepsis is crucial, since the condition can spread quickly and lead to death. The new lab-on-a-chip, from researchers at the University of Illinois, monitors for early signs of sepsis by counting the total number of white blood cells in a blood sample. At the same time, it monitors the amount of neutrophils and the protein marker CD64, both of which indicate the response level of the patient’s immune system.

The team hopes that one day the device could find its way into the home, for even earlier testing.
