A simple, saliva-based test for autism could one day provide an early diagnosis, and more reliable, diagnosis.
Currently, diagnosising autism relys on patterns in behavior and social skills, which are not always consistent or clear. As an alternative, teams from Clarkson University and the State University of New York are creating a new test by using mass spectrometry to compare the protein levels in the saliva of both autistic and non-autistic children. They have determined nine proteins that are much higher in saliva of people of with autism, and three that were lower or absent altogether. This is the first time autism markers have been identified in saliva.
The test still has some distance to go before it is ready for market, and the next goal of the researchers is to test the procedure on a larger group.
