The EcoMow automatic lawnmower not only cuts the grass, it also harvests the clippings to use as biofuel and could have applications beyond keeping lawns tidy.

Developed by a team from George Mason University, the EcoMow is equipped with a bar cutter and a pelletizer that compresses the grass clippings into pellets using high pressure and temperatures. The resulting pellets are then sent to the gasifier, where they are dried with hot air and converted into a fuel that can be used in a conventional gas engine.

The harvested pellets can also be used as biofuel for other devices, and for this reason chief design engineer Jason Force is looking into the EcoMow’s application in the developing world as an automatic biofuel harvester that could gather biomass at night and then plug itself in to a power unit during the day to deliver power to the region.
