Egg-Based Pill Could Ease Celiac Disease

Egg-Based Pill Could Ease Celiac Disease
Jul-19-15
A new drug made of egg yolk extract may allow people with celiac disease to eat and enjoy gluten products safely, simply by taking a pill.

People with celiac disease (also known as gluten-intolerant) are not able to eat grain-based products because of a component in the gluten, called gliadin, which inhibits the digestion of celiac sufferers.

The new supplement, created by a team at the University of Alberta, was made using an ingredient in chicken egg yolks that will bind with gluten when it is in the stomach. This action helps to “neutralize” the gluten and prevents the gliadin from being absorbed and damaging the small intestine. The new drug is expecting to begin undergoing testing within a year.
