Electric Glove Improves Sense of Touch

A stimulation glove designed for the elderly and stroke victims could help to improve their motor skills and tactile perception.

A diminishing sense of touch is common among stoke patients and the aging. To help treat the problem, the research team from Ruhr University Bochum developed a glove that will passively stimulate certain nerve cells to improve the communication between neurons. The glove was tested on two set of patients (65 to 89 years old and 47 to 59 years old). Before treatment with the glove began, the older patients’ sense of touch was much weaker than the younger patients’. However, that difference was no longer evident after treatment.

The team also tested the glove on stroke patients, with treatment lasting more than two years for some volunteers. Almost all cases showed a marked improvement in tactile discrimination.
