Electronic Retainer Lets You Hear with Your Tongue

Electronic Retainer Lets You Hear with Your Tongue
Jan-15-15
An electronic retainer for the hearing-impaired aids in hearing by stimulating areas of the tongue.

Developed by a team from Colorado State University, the prototype device consists of a Bluetooth-enabled microphone earpiece and a smart retainer embedded with an array of electrodes. The retainer translates sounds into a specific pattern, which the user can feel by pressing their tongue against the device. The team hopes that, over time, the brain will be trained to interpret the patterns of electrical impulses as words.
