In order to improve the safety of cyclists sharing the road with vehicles, Ford has developed a prototype emoji jacket that could enable cyclists to graphically communicate their intentions and feelings to drivers.
Every year more than 2,000 cyclists are killed in Europe alone, so Ford determined that using emojis was the quickest and most effective way to communicate with drivers.
Ford partnered with Designworks who came up with the idea of using emojis on a jacket. Six emojis were available to the riders: left and right turn signals, a hazard signal for stopping, and a frowny, smiley and neutral faced emoji, which could be triggered remotely.
