Encouraging Natural Gas Vehicles

Mar-08-12 3M has developed tanks for natural gas strong enough for use in vehicles, which could lead to more options for creating cars powered by natural gas.

The tanks are made from a sheet of woven threads of carbon, secured with an epoxy that has been enhanced with nanoparticles. The nanoparticles enhance the strength and rigidity of the tanks, which are then lined with plastic.

The new tanks are strong enough to contain the gas at the high pressures necessary to power automobiles, but take up much less space than conventional tanks.
