Exosuit Goes Deeper, Stays Longer

Exosuit Goes Deeper, Stays Longer
Mar-01-14
Developed for deep-sea dives, the Exosuit will allow divers to stay submerged for hours at a time while still remaining nimble enough to carry out delicate tests.

The key to the suit’s technology are its rotary joints, which were invented by Phil Nuytten. Although the suit is made of hard metal, to withstand pressure a depths up to 1000 feet, the joints allow the wearer to bend their arms and legs more freely. While the diver actually has enough range of motion to technically swim in the 530-pound aluminum suit, it is equipped with four 1.6 horsepower thrusters to make movement a bit easier. The Exosuit also has more safety features than previous models—in addition to being tethered to a boat, the suit contains enough battery power and oxygen to support the diver for 50 hours underwater.
