Eyeglasses Lens Can Be Darkened Manually

Eyeglasses Lens Can Be Darkened Manually
Feb-03-15
A new eyeglasses lens that can be switched manually from clear to tinted could alleviate some of the shortcomings of conventional transitional lenses.

Transitional lenses, which achieve their darkening effect through shape-changing silver halide molecules, often take time to darken, are not dark enough, and will not work if the lenses in a shaded place—such as inside a car or under a ball cap. The new lenses, created by a team from Georgia Tech, are equipped with electrochromic polymers that can be manually triggered by a current to create a dark, brown tint. The lens tint can be changed within seconds, and mixing different ratios of the polymer colors will create different tints.
