A facial recognition system able to detect levels of pain could make it easier for hospital staff to measure pain levels in children.
The software system was developed by a team from UC San Diego School of Medicine in order to assess pain levels in children, who are often unable to express their pain accurately. The system was created by analyzing the faces of children 5 to 18 years old who had undergone laparoscopic appendectomies, and then comparing that data to input from caregivers in order to assign a pain level score for each expression.
Besides making it easier to determine the child’s pain level, the system could also function as a constant monitor, tracking and measuring pain cycles autonomously for better patient care and medication dose.
