Far-UVC Light Safely Kills Airborne Viruses

Far-UVC Light Safely Kills Airborne Viruses
Feb-14-18
Researchers have demonstrated a narrow-spectrum UV light that can safely destroy airborne viruses in public spaces.

Developed by a team from Columbia University Medical Center, the technology relies on far-ultraviolet C light, called far-UVC. The limited penetration depth of the light allows it to enter and kill tiny bacteria and viruses, while the much larger human cells are left safely untouched. The team believes the far-UVC lights could be affordably mass produced, eventually fighting airborne germs in public spaces and office buildings.
