Fighting Cancer with Gold and Lasers

Researchers at Rice University have developed a way to kill residual cancer cells using gold nanoparticles.After cancer surgery, residual cells are often left behind, which can lead to a recurrence of the disease. To minimize that risk, the team from Rice University attached cancer antibodies to gold nanoparticles, which causes the particles to search out cancer cells. When the nanoparticles are exposed to a laser light, they will heat up and create a plasmonic bubble inside the surrounding liquid. This bubble will destroy the cancer cell while also allowing surgeons to pinpoint the areas where the “attack” took place, helping the team ensure all the cells have been destroyed.

Ayurveda has used gold in the form of medicine from ages. It has a unique procedure of reducing the metallic form of gold into the consumable form (ash). purifying it by processing in various kashayams ( herbal decoction) and later triturating it in different herbs reduces the gold from its original metallic form to the nano particle form like bhasmas. And the same is used for treating many disorders both acute and chronic and even now we use it in our regular clinical practice in cases of malignancies.
