Filter Improves Low Light Smartphone Photography

Filter Improves Low Light Smartphone Photography
Oct-31-15
A new filter developed specifically for smartphones lets in three times more light than current filters, enabling the phone’s camera to take high quality photos in low light situations.

Created by a Rajesh Menon of the University of Utah, the color filter is made up of a thin wafer of glass etched on one side with microscopic ridges. These ridges bend the light in a specific way, letting three times more light reach the camera’s sensor while also creating at least 25 new color patterns, which are then read by software.
The lens is being developed with smartphone cameras in mind, but could also have applications in robotics, security cameras and self-driving cars.
