Fingerprint-Activated Pill Dispenser Prevents Overdose

Fingerprint-Activated Pill Dispenser Prevents Overdose
Jul-01-15
A tamper-resistant, fingerprint-reading pill dispenser programmed to dispense the correct dosages could help reduce drug overdoses—whether accidental or intentional.

Designed primarily with painkillers in mind—which are at the highest risk for abuse—the prototype device is extremely sturdy, and cannot be hacked with a hammer or drill. Made of the same allow used in aircraft landing gear, the cylindrical device will scan the user’s fingerprint to confirm identification, then rotate an internal disc that dispenses the pill. The dispenser can hold up to 60 tablets, of Oxycontin, the most commonly abused prescription drug.
