Fishing Net Inspired Space Junk Collector

Fishing Net Inspired Space Junk Collector
Dec-11-16
Japan has launched a space junk collector designed in collaboration with a company that makes fishing nets.

The experimental vessel, called Kounotori, is equipped with an electrodynamic tether made out of thin wires of aluminum and stainless steel that will attach to space debris. According to the team, as the tether moves through the Earth’s magnetic field, it will slow the space junk, causing it to drop in orbit until it burns up in the Earth’s atmosphere.
