Flat, Flexible, Transparent Imaging Device

Flat, Flexible, Transparent Imaging Device
Feb-25-13
Researchers have developed a flexible, transparent screen that also functions as a camera, integrating the camera into the display itself.

The team, from Johannes Kepler University in Austria, created the device by embedding fluorescent particles into a polymer sheet. As light enters the display, some of it is scattered throughout the sheet where it is detected by optical sensors along the perimeter. These sensors capture the light and send the data to a computer, which then then combines the signal information to create a gray-scale image. The researchers are currently working toward improving the resolution of the images and allow for full color capture.

Ultimately, the device could be used to offer gesture-control in video games and computers without the need for motion-tracking devices or cameras.
