FlexFoil Reduces Airplane Fuel Consumption

FlexFoil Reduces Airplane Fuel Consumption
Jan-22-14
The FlexFoil can be integrated into existing airplane wings or incorporated into new ones to reduce fuel consumption by up to 12 percent.

Designed by Flexys, the FlexFoil was developed to optimize wing aerodynamics by changing its camber and twist while still maintaining an attached flow. The structure is meant to be integrated into the trailing edge of the wing, where its built-in actuators and sensors will allow for “large deformations in shape morphing with very small strains.” The FlexFoil also more evenly distributes pressure along the wing, can reduce wind noise upon landing and will reduce the accumulation of ice and debris.
