Contain your trash and capture flies with the Fly Catcher, a trash can lid conecpt design that lures fruit flies and then traps them inside the lid.
Fruit flies are attracted to the scent of trash, and can quickly multiply and take over a kitchen. To help control the population without resorting to toxic sprays, designers Chang Shih-hsun and Hung Jui-yuan created a trash can lid concept with slits on the bottom, which allows the smell of the trash to escape and attract the flies. The flies are able to enter the lid through small slots on the top. However, the slots are much easier for the flies to enter than exit, causing the flies to become trapped within the lid where they will eventually starve. An acrylic window at the top of the lid allows the homeowner to check and see if the flies are moving, and the lid can be separated to empty out the flies when desired.
