FRED System Uses Bacteria to Sense Pollutants

FRED System Uses Bacteria to Sense Pollutants
Aug-11-15
The FRED sensor system relies on bacteria to detect contaminants in water and transmit a signal wirelessly, eliminating the need for individuals to visit the area to take a sample.

Created by a student team from Canada, the FRED (Field-Ready Electrochemical Detector) is equipped with bacteria that have been genetically engineered to respond to different pollutants in water with an electrical signal. The level of the signal corresponds to the level of contamination, and the units can be placed on site and then left to monitor the water remotely. Once a contaminant has been detected, the system will transmit the information to a smartphone or tablet via a mobile connection.
