A newly synthesized antibiotic is being heralded as a game-changer in the fight against superbugs.
The antibiotic was developed by a team from the University of Lincoln in an attempt to synthesize teixobactin, a recently discovered natural antibiotic discovered in 2015. The team simplified the process by replacing amino acids at key points in the structure of the antibiotic, significantly speeding the synthesis.
In tests on mice, the new antibiotic was successful in treating a bacterial infection in mice, while also minimizing the severity of the infection.
