Glycerin Lenses Adjust as Needed

Glycerin Lenses Adjust as Needed
Jan-29-17
Researchers have developed glycerin-filled glasses that can shift focus as needed.

Developed by a team from the University of Utah, the liquid-based lenses are made from glycerin that has been enclosed by a flexible membrane. The rear membrane of the lens is connected to a set of activators that move it back and forth, altering the lens’s curvature and—therefore—its focus.

The amount of focal change is triggered by the eyeglass frames also created by the team, which feature a distance meter able to detect how far away an object is and use that data to control the lens’s curve.
